Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

Melissa has several acronyms that can help you understand where the calories that you consume are going. The first is EAT (Exercise Activity Thermogenesis), which refers to the exercise that you do in a day that helps you maintain your weight. This usually amounts to about 10% of your calories expended.

Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

The second is NEAT (Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) or the non-exercise daily activities that can help you burn extra calories. This usually amounts to about 15% of your calories expended in a day.

Thermic Effect of Food

The third is TEF (Thermic Effect of Food) which refers to how our bodies use different types of foods and the amount of calories that it takes to break down the food itself. This usually amounts to about 10% of your calories expended in a day. Melissa talks about this in regards to fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

Basal Metabolic Rate

The last is BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) which refers to the number of calories needed to make your body function while at rest. Your BMR will fluctuate based on your weight and whether you’re performing activities like strength training.

Supplementation

Melissa talks about the most important baselines of health and how we must address those before moving onto supplementation for weight loss. She goes over L-Glutamine, C.L.A, and Acetyl L- Carnitine as potentially beneficial.
